Oklahoma's Presidential Results -- What Happens Next?

When we Americans cast our votes for a Presidential candidate, we are actually voting for the slate of electors who are pledged to vote for that candidate in the Electoral College.

On December 15th, winning electors from each state met within their states to select the President and Vice President they support.  With the victory of Senator John McCain in Oklahoma's Presidential contest, the seven electors pledged to him recorded their votes in the state Capitol.

The electors then signed, sealed and certified the packages of electoral votes and sent them to the President of the Senate, the Archivist of the United States and other designated Federal and State officials.  These officials must receive the all electoral vote packages from across the country before December 24th.

On January 6th, Congress will meet in joint session to count the votes and declare Senator Obama our President-Elect.  He will be inaugurated January 20, 2009.
